How and When to Perform the Aarti

The Brihaspati aarti is sung on Thursday, at the end of the puja, after the Brihaspati Vrat Katha has been read or heard. It closes the worship and is usually performed by the whole family together.

  1. Prepare an aarti plate with a diya (lamp) filled with ghee and a cotton wick. Many families also place a piece of camphor on the plate.
  2. Keep a small bell, a little water, yellow flowers and the prasad (soaked chana dal, jaggery, bananas or yellow sweets) ready near the altar.
  3. Light the ghee lamp and the camphor. Ring the bell with your left hand and hold the plate in your right hand.
  4. Wave the plate slowly in clockwise circles in front of the image of Lord Vishnu or Brihaspati Dev while everyone sings "Om Jai Brihaspati Deva".
  5. After the last verse, sprinkle a little water around the plate, then offer the flame to each person. Devotees pass their palms over the flame and touch them to their eyes and head.
  6. Finish by bowing, asking forgiveness for any mistakes in the puja, and sharing the prasad.

Meaning of the Aarti in Simple Words

The aarti begins by hailing Brihaspati Dev and offering him bananas and dry fruits again and again. It praises him as the complete Supreme Being who knows every heart, the father and master of the whole world.

The middle verses say that his charanamrit (holy water from his feet) is pure and washes away sins, and that he fulfils good wishes. Whoever surrenders body, mind and wealth to him finds the Lord standing at their door. He is called kind to the humble, an ocean of mercy, the friend of devotees, and the one who frees souls from worldly bondage.

The aarti then asks him to remove all doubts and unhealthy desires. The last verse promises that anyone who sings this aarti with love will surely receive great joy.

Do's for Singing the Aarti

  • Bathe and wear clean clothes, preferably yellow, before the puja.
  • Sing with devotion and a calm mind; correct pronunciation matters less than a sincere heart.
  • Stand facing the deity and let the whole family join in, with clapping or the bell keeping the rhythm.
  • Use pure ghee for the lamp and keep the flame steady and safe.
  • Stay attentive until the aarti ends, then accept the flame's blessing and the prasad respectfully.
