Meaning and Significance of Brihaspativar Puja

Lord Brihaspati

Brihaspati, or Jupiter, is regarded in Jyotish as the most benevolent of the grahas. It is also called the priest or Guru of all the gods, or of the universe. Guru Brihaspati is regarded with the utmost respect and admiration as the celestial mentor of the gods.

Meaning of Brihaspativar Puja

According to Hindu mythology, each of the seven days of the week is devoted to a particular god from the Hindu pantheon. Brihaspativar means Thursday, also known as Guruvar, and it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Brihaspati, the Guru of all Devas. The colour yellow is associated with the day. Devotees observe a fast on this day, perform puja, offer prayers, bhog, flowers, and fruits to Lord Brihaspati, and recite the Vrat Katha to be blessed with good health, success, and prosperity. In some parts of India, if there is no temple or idol of Lord Vishnu or Brihaspati nearby, devotees worship the banana tree and water it religiously.

Significance of Brihaspati Puja

In Hinduism, worshipping Lord Brihaspati, or Guru (Jupiter) Devta, every Thursday is believed to bless devotees with wealth, success, prosperity, and good health, and to help remove all sins. Devotees also believe it brings strength, courage, and long life, and that when Lord Brihaspati is pleased, he grants the childless the boon of motherhood, along with a joyous life, ethical values, and professional success.

Many sagas and folktales are associated with the Brihaspativar puja fast. Because they arose from local legends, the stories vary from region to region.

The Spiritual Meaning of the Vrat

The word "guru" is traditionally explained as one who removes darkness. Keeping the Brihaspativar vrat is therefore seen as a way of honouring the guru principle: the wisdom that guides a person towards right conduct. The fast itself is a small discipline of self-control, and the weekly rhythm of prayer, katha and charity is believed to purify the mind and build steady faith.

Brihaspati as Guru and Planet of Wisdom

In the Puranas, Brihaspati is the son of the sage Angiras and the teacher of the devas, known for his learning, eloquence and knowledge of dharma. In Vedic astrology, the planet Guru (Jupiter) is regarded as the most benevolent graha, linked with knowledge, teachers, children, wealth, marriage and spiritual growth. Devotees believe that worship on Thursday brings his blessings and eases the difficulties attributed to a weak Jupiter.

Who Usually Observes It and Why

  • Married women, who often keep the fast for the well-being and prosperity of their families.
  • Unmarried young women and men, who traditionally pray to Guru for a good marriage.
  • Students and teachers, who seek the guru's blessing for learning and clear thinking.
  • People advised by a family priest or astrologer to strengthen Jupiter.
  • Anyone who wishes to honour Lord Vishnu and Brihaspati Dev with a weekly act of devotion.

Symbolism of Yellow and the Banana Tree

Yellow is the colour of Brihaspati. It is linked with turmeric, gold, ripe grain and the light of knowledge, and it is considered auspicious and pure. This is why devotees wear yellow, offer yellow flowers, chana dal, jaggery and besan sweets, and donate yellow items on Thursdays.

The banana tree is worshipped because, according to tradition, Lord Vishnu and Brihaspati Dev reside in it. Devotees pour water mixed with turmeric at its root, apply turmeric or sandalwood, tie a sacred thread around it and light a lamp nearby. Bananas are offered to Lord Vishnu, so by custom many observers do not eat bananas on Thursday; the offered bananas are given away as prasad.
