Importance of Yellow Color

Lord Brihaspati

The planet Jupiter is regarded in Jyotish as the most benevolent of the grahas and is famously known as Guru Brihaspati (Lord Brihaspati). He is the lord of light, associated with enlightenment, knowledge, and wisdom. This light is depicted as yellow rays and is associated with Guru Brihaspati. It is believed that Jupiter spreads light, positivity, and optimism all around it. Brihaspati is considered the most kind-hearted, sacred, and pious of all planets. It is linked to growth, prosperity, and good fortune, and is associated with yellow.

Yellow, the Preferred Color

Lord Brihaspati is a Brahmin by birth. He has four arms. He sits on a lotus flower and is clad in yellow cloth. His chariot is drawn by eight yellow horses. He loves yellow desserts, and the colour yellow is dear to him. His preferred gemstone is the yellow sapphire (Pukhraj). His favourite metals are also yellow: gold and brass. Lord Vishnu wears Pitambar (yellow garments), and Thursday is sacred to him as well as to Brihaspati. This is why it is considered auspicious to wear yellow on Thursdays, the day of Lord Brihaspati.

Use of Yellow for Brihaspati Puja

In astrology, the planet Jupiter is believed to play a significant role in a person's horoscope; it can make or break one's life. It is said to shape a person's nature as well as their level of optimism. If Jupiter is malefic in one's horoscope, one needs to strengthen it. Lord Brihaspati is the protector and guardian of all. Therefore, everyone must worship him. To offer prayers to Lord Brihaspati, one must take a bath and dress in yellow-coloured clothes. One must offer yellow flowers, yellow fruits, and yellow sweets to Lord Vishnu and Lord Brihaspati. Giving gold, turmeric, yellow gems, honey, and yellow clothes in charity to Brahmins and gurus is considered auspicious and sacred, and is believed to bring prosperity and good fortune. Even feeding yellow bananas and yellow sweets to animals such as cows and birds is believed to help strengthen Jupiter.

Therefore, wear yellow clothes and offer yellow items to be blessed by Lord Brihaspati.

Yellow Items Used in the Puja

On a Thursday, the altar is usually dressed in yellow from start to finish. Commonly used items include:

  • A yellow cloth spread on the platform where the image of Lord Vishnu or Brihaspati Dev is placed.
  • Turmeric (haldi), used for tilak and to colour rice (akshat) yellow.
  • Yellow sandalwood paste or kesar (saffron) for the forehead mark.
  • Yellow flowers such as marigold, offered at the altar and at the banana plant.
  • Chana dal (split Bengal gram) and jaggery (gud), the classic Thursday bhog.
  • Ripe bananas, and a lamp lit with ghee.

What to Wear and Offer

Devotees try to wear yellow on Thursday: a yellow sari, kurta, dhoti or even just a yellow scarf. Some also apply a turmeric or saffron tilak. During the puja, yellow flowers, chana dal, jaggery, bananas and yellow sweets are offered, and many families pour water mixed with a little turmeric at the root of a banana plant. Yellow items such as chana dal, turmeric or yellow cloth are also commonly given in charity on this day.

Yellow Foods Traditionally Eaten

Many people who keep the Thursday fast eat only once, and by custom the meal is often yellow and simple. Popular choices include:

  • Besan ladoo, boondi or other yellow sweets.
  • Kesari halwa or sooji halwa cooked in ghee.
  • Chana dal, kadhi, or khichdi coloured with turmeric.
  • Saffron or yellow sweet rice.

Many devotees avoid salt on the vrat; some use rock salt (sendha namak) instead. Bananas are offered to Lord Vishnu and the banana tree is worshipped, so by custom many observers do not eat bananas on Thursday; the offered bananas are given away as prasad. Family customs differ, so follow the practice of your elders.

Symbolism of Yellow

In Hindu tradition, yellow stands for knowledge, learning and purity of mind, the very qualities Guru Brihaspati represents as teacher of the gods. It is the colour of sunlight and ripened crops, so it also suggests growth and abundance. Turmeric yellow is considered auspicious in ceremonies such as weddings, and yellow is worn on Basant Panchami to honour Goddess Saraswati. Wearing yellow on Thursday is therefore seen as a way of inviting wisdom and good fortune into daily life.
