Traditions and Customs of Brihaspati Puja

Lord Brihaspati

According to Hindu mythology, each of the seven days of the week is devoted to a particular god of the Hindu pantheon, who is worshipped for blessings such as health, peace, love, wealth, success, fame, and prosperity. Hindu mythology is a vast body of traditional folklore that deals with Hinduism in detail and is an integral part of Sanskrit literature.

Thursday, or Brihaspativar, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Brihaspati, the supreme Guru of all the gods. This is why Thursday is also called Guruvar or Gurubar. Apart from the usual puja rituals, devotees follow other traditional customs on this day. The traditions are given below:

What to Wear

Yellow is the colour of Thursday. Therefore, devotees traditionally wear yellow clothes and apply sandalwood paste (yellow chandan) on their foreheads.

What to Offer

Lord Brihaspati or Lord Vishnu is offered yellow fruits and flowers on this day.

Fasting Customs

Devotees fast during the day and can eat only once. The meal consists of Bengal gram (chana dal), besan, and ghee. Any yellow vegetarian food can be eaten on this day. Many devotees avoid salt on the vrat; some use rock salt (sendha namak) instead.

Bhog and Prasad

The Bhog or Prasad offered to the Lord traditionally includes yellow delicacies such as yellow sweets, chana-gur, and bananas. By custom, many observers do not eat bananas on Thursday; the bananas offered to the Lord are given away as prasad. After the puja is performed, the Tulsi plant is watered. One can also add a few Tulsi leaves to the Prasad before eating it.

Illuminating the Home

A ghee diya is regarded as a symbol of wealth, success, and prosperity. Devotees traditionally light ghee diyas in temples or in their homes.

Worshipping the Banana Tree

In some regions, the devotees plant a banana tree and worship and water it. The banana tree is regarded as a symbol of Lord Vishnu and Lord Brihaspati and can be worshipped if there is no temple nearby or no idol of Lord Vishnu or Brihaspati.

Puja in Hanuman Temple

In some areas, Brihaspati Puja is performed in the Hanuman temple. Many devotees also worship Lord Hanuman on Thursday as the great devotee of Lord Rama, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, and offering prayers in the Hanuman temple on this day is considered auspicious.

Gain Wealth and Success

Many sagas and folktales are associated with the Brihaspati fast and puja. It is believed that devotees who sincerely observe the fast and perform the puja on Brihaspativar are blessed with wealth, success, and prosperity.

Offering Charity/Donations

There is a saga associated with Brihaspati puja. In it, Lord Brihaspati comes to a queen disguised as a sadhu seeking alms. She turns him away and asks how to be rid of her wealth, and her family loses everything. Later she realizes her mistake, keeps the Brihaspativar vrat and begins giving generously in charity. Therefore, following this belief, devotees observe the custom of never sending anyone away from their homes empty-handed.

Helping the Poor and Needy

In the Vrata Katha, Brihaspati Dev comes on a Thursday disguised as a sadhu, and devotees believe that the Lord may come in any guise to test them. Therefore, helping the poor and needy is considered an essential ritual of the Brihaspati puja.

Brihaspati Vrat Katha Customs

No one should leave the place or speak until the Vrata Katha is completed. The person reading the Vrata Katha must cover their head with a yellow cloth and read the Katha aloud. Once the Katha is finished, those who read and listened to it should eat the Prasad, wash their hands, and then resume other activities.

Devotees believe that Lord Brihaspati blesses those who perform the Brihaspati Puja sincerely and with complete devotion, and that the hopes and desires of such devotees are fulfilled.
