Brihaspati Puja in History

Lord Brihaspati

Brihaspati's position in the horoscope is believed to have a strong influence on one's life. The planet Jupiter, or Brihaspati, represents prosperity, wisdom, knowledge, lineage, wealth, respect, fame and justice. The legend behind Brihaspati Puja, or Guru Puja, is given below:

In ancient India, there lived a king who was blessed with seven sons and their wives. Once, in the king's absence, the queen turned away empty-handed a Brahmin sadhu who had come to the palace seeking alms. According to the katha, the sadhu was Lord Brihaspati himself in disguise. This angered Brihaspati Dev, and the wealth and prosperity of the kingdom were lost, until the king's family was left in poverty.

The youngest daughter-in-law looked for a way to restore the lost wealth and overcome the crisis. She learned to keep a fast for Lord Brihaspati every Thursday (Brihaspativar), to worship him and to feed Brahmins. When the vrat was kept with devotion, the family's wealth returned and all their troubles were removed. From then on, according to tradition, the ritual of performing Brihaspati Puja became part of Hindu culture.

Traditionally, when her husband has gone to a foreign country, a Hindu woman makes two human figures behind the main door of her house. The custom is believed to bring about the husband's safe and early return. If someone in the family is facing poverty, however, the human figures are made on a box instead.

Who Is Lord Brihaspati?

In Hindu tradition, Brihaspati is the guru, or teacher and priest, of the devas. The Puranas describe him as the son of the sage Angiras, one of the great rishis born from the mind of Lord Brahma. Hymns addressed to Brihaspati already appear in the Rigveda, where he is praised as the lord of prayer and sacred speech.

As the guru of the gods, Brihaspati guides Indra and the devas with wise counsel, just as Shukracharya guides the asuras. In the Mahabharata, his son Kacha goes to study under Shukracharya to learn the secret of reviving the dead, a story that shows how highly learning was valued in Brihaspati's family.

Why Thursday Is Dedicated to Him

In the Hindu calendar, each day of the week is ruled by a graha (planet). Thursday is ruled by Guru, the planet Jupiter, which is identified with Brihaspati. That is why the day is called Brihaspativar or Guruvar. Thursday is also sacred to Lord Vishnu, so many devotees worship Vishnu and Brihaspati together on this day, often beside a banana tree.

How the Vrat Is Followed Today

The legend of the king, his queen and the sadhu is still read aloud as the Brihaspativar Vrat Katha in homes across North India. Devotees, many of them women praying for their families, wear yellow, offer chana dal, jaggery, turmeric and yellow flowers, light a ghee lamp, read or listen to the katha and sing the aarti "Om Jai Brihaspati Deva". The vrat is commonly kept for 16 Thursdays; some devotees keep it for 5, 7, 11 or 21 Thursdays, or for as long as they wish, before the udyapan.

Lessons of the Legend

  • Respect those who ask for help: the kingdom's troubles began when a sadhu seeking alms was turned away.
  • Generosity invites grace: the youngest daughter-in-law's devotion to the vrat opened the way for the family's recovery.
  • Humility over pride: wealth that is not shared is believed to be easily lost.
  • Faith needs discipline: the remedy was not a single act but a regular Thursday fast, kept with patience.
