The Legend Associated with Fasting on Thursday
Long ago, there lived a generous and devout king who kept the Thursday fast, but his queen was exactly the opposite of him in nature: she disliked giving alms. One day, while the king was away hunting, Lord Brihaspati came to the palace disguised as a sadhu to ask for alms. The queen asked the sadhu how to get rid of her wealth, as she was fed up with giving charity. The sadhu told her that if on Thursdays she plastered the house with cow dung, washed her hair with yellow clay, asked the king to get a shave, ate meat and drank wine, and gave the clothes to the washerman, all her wealth would be destroyed.
The queen followed the sadhu's advice, and within three Thursdays all their wealth was gone. Since the king did not have enough money to make ends meet, he went to another country to earn a livelihood. He started bringing wood from the forest and selling it in the city. Back home, the queen and her maid were left with no food, so the queen sent her maid to get some grain from her sister in a nearby town. Since it was Thursday, the sister was busy listening to the Brihaspativar katha and did not reply to the maid. The maid returned and told the queen what had happened. Later, the queen's sister came and explained that one does not get up or speak while the katha is being told. On her sister's advice, the queen found grain in her own house, learned the method of the vrat from her sister, and began fasting on Thursdays with her maid. In time, their wealth was restored.
Meanwhile, as the king sat grieving in the forest, Brihaspati Dev met him disguised as a sadhu, told him why his troubles had come, and taught him the Thursday vrat and its katha. The king kept the vrat and his earnings improved, but on the following Thursday he forgot to observe the fast. That day, the king of the city held a great feast, and when the city's queen found her necklace missing from its hook, she accused the woodcutter king of stealing it and had him thrown into prison. In prison, Brihaspati Dev appeared before him as a sadhu and told him that he would find four paise at the prison door on Thursday and should use them for the puja. The next Thursday, the king found the four paise, performed the puja and told the katha. That night, Brihaspati Dev told the city's king in a dream that the prisoner was innocent and should be freed. In the morning, the necklace was found hanging on its hook, and the king was released with apologies and gifts. When the king returned to his own city, he saw that his wife's life had changed and that there was prosperity in their house. The king asked the queen about these changes. She told him about the magic of observing the fast on Brihaspativar and pleasing Lord Brihaspati. After that, they lived an abundant and prosperous life.

बहुत समय पहले, एक दानी और धर्मपरायण राजा रहते थे जो गुरुवार का व्रत रखते थे, लेकिन उनकी रानी का स्वभाव उनके बिल्कुल विपरीत था: उसे दान देना अच्छा नहीं लगता था। एक दिन, जब राजा शिकार खेलने वन गए हुए थे, भगवान बृहस्पति साधु का वेश धारण कर भिक्षा माँगने राजमहल के द्वार पर आए। रानी ने साधु से धन से छुटकारा पाने का उपाय पूछा, क्योंकि वह दान-पुण्य से तंग आ चुकी थी। साधु ने बताया कि यदि वह गुरुवार के दिन घर को गोबर से लीपे, पीली मिट्टी से बाल धोए, राजा से हजामत करवाने को कहे, मांस-मदिरा का सेवन करे और कपड़े धोबी के यहाँ धुलने दे, तो उसका सारा धन नष्ट हो जाएगा।
रानी ने साधु की बात मानी, और तीन गुरुवार में ही उनका सारा धन नष्ट हो गया। जब राजा के पास गुज़ारे लायक पैसा भी नहीं रहा, तो वह आजीविका कमाने के लिए परदेश चला गया। वह जंगल से लकड़ी लाकर शहर में बेचने लगा। इधर घर पर रानी और दासी के पास खाने को कुछ नहीं बचा, इसलिए रानी ने अपनी दासी को पास के नगर में रहने वाली अपनी बहन से कुछ अनाज लाने भेजा। गुरुवार होने के कारण बहन बृहस्पतिवार की कथा सुन रही थी और उसने दासी को कोई जवाब नहीं दिया। दासी ने लौटकर रानी को बताया कि वहाँ क्या हुआ था। बाद में रानी की बहन स्वयं आई और समझाया कि जब तक कथा होती है, तब तक न उठा जाता है और न बोला जाता है। बहन के कहने पर रानी को अपने ही घर में अनाज मिल गया, उसने बहन से व्रत की विधि जानी और दासी के साथ गुरुवार का व्रत रखना शुरू कर दिया। समय के साथ उनका धन लौट आया।
दूसरी ओर, जब राजा जंगल में दुखी बैठा था, तब बृहस्पति देव साधु के वेश में उससे मिले, उसे उसके कष्टों का कारण बताया और गुरुवार के व्रत तथा उसकी कथा की विधि सिखाई। राजा ने व्रत रखा और उसकी आमदनी बढ़ गई, लेकिन अगले गुरुवार वह व्रत रखना भूल गया। उसी दिन नगर के राजा ने बड़ा भोज रखा था, और जब नगर की रानी को अपना हार खूंटी पर नहीं मिला, तो उसने लकड़हारे बने राजा पर चोरी का आरोप लगाकर उसे जेल में डलवा दिया। जेल में बृहस्पति देव साधु के रूप में उसके सामने प्रकट हुए और बताया कि गुरुवार को उसे जेल के दरवाज़े पर चार पैसे मिलेंगे, जिनसे वह पूजा करे। अगले गुरुवार राजा को चार पैसे मिले, उसने पूजा की और कथा कही। उसी रात बृहस्पति देव ने नगर के राजा को स्वप्न में बताया कि बंदी निर्दोष है और उसे छोड़ दिया जाए। सुबह हार खूंटी पर टंगा मिला, और राजा को क्षमा माँगकर तथा उपहार देकर विदा किया गया। जब राजा अपने नगर लौटा, तो उसने देखा कि उसकी पत्नी का जीवन बदल गया है और घर में समृद्धि है। राजा ने रानी से इन परिवर्तनों के बारे में पूछा। रानी ने उसे बृहस्पतिवार का व्रत रखने और भगवान बृहस्पति को प्रसन्न करने के चमत्कार के बारे में बताया। उसके बाद, वे सुख-समृद्धि से भरा जीवन जीने लगे।
