Lord Brihaspati is a passionate devotee of Lord Shiva and the son of Maharishi Angira. Lord Brihaspati offered his prayers to Lord Shiva faithfully and sincerely at Prabhas Tirth. Delighted by Lord Brihaspati's devotion and dedication, Lord Shiva included him in the family of the Devas and blessed him with the position of 'Guru of all Devas'.
Brihaspati, usually known as Guru or Jupiter, is regarded in Jyotish as the most benevolent of the grahas. Devotees believe that people who worship Lord Brihaspati are freed from their sins, gain strength and courage, and are blessed with well-being. They also believe that, if pleased with one's devotion, Lord Brihaspati blesses childless couples with children and enhances their educational and professional prospects.
Planet Jupiter is viewed as the planet of benevolence: most kind, giving, auspicious, and pious. Knowledge, philosophy, goodness, and compassion are features of a person with a strong Jupiter. In some horoscopes, the astrological position of Jupiter is not favourable, which, according to astrologers, may lead the person to live a difficult life without abundance.
Astrologers believe that a person with a strong and fortunate Jupiter tends to be famous, wealthy, spiritual, lucky, moral, religious, healthy, and passionate, may become a government leader, and is blessed with children. In astrological belief, a malefic Jupiter is linked with skin and heart ailments, weak nerves, blood impurities, mental imbalance, and a heightened sexual urge. This is a traditional belief and not a substitute for medical advice; anyone who is unwell should consult a doctor.
Astrologers traditionally say that people whose horoscopes are dominated by Jupiter tend to put on weight and grow in grandeur as they age, and they link diabetes with Jupiter. This too is an astrological belief, not medical advice; anyone with health concerns should consult a doctor. To reduce the ill effects of Jupiter, devotees worship Lord Brihaspati, and they believe he is pleased with devotees who worship him on Thursday and observe the Brihaspati fast. There is a Guru mantra that devotees should chant on Thursday after performing the morning rituals. The mantra should be chanted facing east (north-east is also considered auspicious); devotees believe this reduces the effect of a malefic Jupiter in one's horoscope. One must listen to or read the Brihaspati Katha in the evening. After offering prayers to the Lord in the evening, one may complete the fast by eating simple food. Many devotees avoid salt on the vrat; some use rock salt (sendha namak) instead.
The mantra is: Aum Hreem Kleem Hoom Brihaspataye Namah
Devotees believe that Lord Brihaspati fulfils the wishes of those who observe the fast on Thursday and blesses them with prosperity. One must offer prayers to Lord Brihaspati as directed after reading or listening to the Katha. Yellow is the favourite colour of Lord Brihaspati, so one must wear yellow-coloured clothes while offering prayers to the Lord and on Thursdays for well-being. One must also apply sandalwood paste on the puja day. If observing the fast, one must eat only once a day, preferably in the evening after offering prayers to the Lord. Many devotees avoid salt on the vrat; some use rock salt (sendha namak) instead. The meal should consist of yellow moong dal or skinned chana dal.
Devotees believe that those who observe the fast for Lord Brihaspati with dedication and devotion are protected from difficulties, adversities, and distress, and that Lord Brihaspati guides his passionate followers along the right path of life. Yellow sapphire (Pukhraj), or yellow topaz as a lower-cost substitute, is worn for Jupiter; astrologers believe wearing it helps reduce the effect of a malefic Jupiter in one's horoscope.
