Parashurama Avatar

Parashurama Avatar

The sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu is Parashurama, a Brahmin warrior-sage. Lord Vishnu came into the world as Parashurama to end the tyranny of arrogant Kshatriya kings who oppressed the people and the Brahmins. The name Parashurama derives from Parashu, which means axe, and Rama, which was his own name. Therefore, Parashurama means 'Rama with the axe'. Parashurama was an ardent and passionate devotee of Lord Shiva. He was skilled in the art of battle and was a great archer. He learned martial arts from Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva gifted Parashurama an axe, the Bhargavastra, and a bow named Vijaya.

When Parashurama came into the world, the situation was tumultuous. According to the Puranas, there were frequent battles between the Kshatriyas and other kingdoms. The story of Parashurama is as follows.

Parashurama was the son of Jamadagni and Renuka of the Brahmin dynasty. Once upon a time, Kartavirya Arjuna, a powerful king, came to Jamadagni's hermitage. Parashurama was not present, and the king stole Jamadagni's Kamadhenu cow. The cow was valuable to Jamadagni as it gave endless litres of milk. When Parashurama learned of the theft, he was infuriated.

He pursued the king, killed him and brought the Kamadhenu cow back to his father. On hearing of their father's death, Kartavirya's sons were filled with anger and grief. To take revenge, they went to the hermitage while Parashurama was away and killed Jamadagni. When Parashurama returned home, he was shocked to see his mother, Renuka, grieving beside his father's dead body. She was crying and, according to a popular telling, beat her chest twenty-one times.

Enraged and sorrowful at this sight, Parashurama vowed to rid the earth of oppressive Kshatriya kings twenty-one times, once for each time his mother had beaten her chest in grief. He travelled all over the earth, killed the sons of Kartavirya, and then rid the earth of oppressive Kshatriya kings twenty-one times. After fulfilling his vow, Parashurama performed the Ashvamedha sacrifice and gave away all the land he had conquered to the Brahmins.

Parashurama played a significant role in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. He served as a guide to Karna, Bhishma, and Drona. He is believed to return as a military mentor to Kalki in the Kali Yuga.

Yuga and Purpose of the Parashurama Avatar

Parashurama appeared in the Treta Yuga, before the birth of Lord Rama. According to tradition, his purpose was to humble rulers who had grown arrogant and forgotten their duty to protect the people. He is unusual among the avatars because he is counted as a Chiranjeevi, one of the immortals who are believed to still live on earth. Tradition holds that he remains in meditation on the Mahendra mountain.

The Ramayana tells how Parashurama met the young Rama after Lord Shiva's bow was broken at Sita's swayamvara. He challenged Rama to string the bow of Lord Vishnu. When Rama did so with ease, Parashurama recognised him as Vishnu himself and returned to his life of austerity. Devotees see this meeting as the passing of the divine mission from one avatar to the next.

Iconography and Symbolism

  • The parashu (axe), a gift from Lord Shiva, symbolises the power to cut through injustice and pride.
  • Matted hair and simple dress show that he was a sage and an ascetic, even though he was a fierce warrior.
  • The bow recalls his mastery of archery and his role as a teacher of the martial arts.

The lesson most often drawn from his life is that knowledge and strength must serve dharma. Parashurama is also remembered for his obedience to his father Jamadagni, and for giving away everything he had won once his vow was complete.

Parashurama Jayanti and Temples

Parashurama Jayanti is celebrated on Akshaya Tritiya, the third day of the bright half of Vaishakha. Devotees fast, worship Lord Vishnu in the form of Parashurama and give charity, because good deeds done on Akshaya Tritiya are believed to bear lasting fruit.

According to a popular legend, Parashurama threw his axe into the sea and reclaimed the coastal land of Kerala and Konkan. Well-known places linked with him include the Parshuram temple at Chiplun in Maharashtra and Parashuram Kund in Arunachal Pradesh, where pilgrims gather for a holy dip on Makar Sankranti.

Parashurama and Thursday Worship

Thursday is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and to Brihaspati, the guru of the gods. Devotees who keep the Brihaspativar vrat can remember Parashurama as a great guru, since he taught Bhishma, Drona and Karna. Wearing yellow, offering yellow flowers and chana dal, and chanting "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" are common ways of honouring Lord Vishnu on Thursday. Many devotees believe that remembering his avatars during the puja helps them grow in discipline and respect for their teachers.
